Cats have three main blood types: A, B, and AB. Type A is the most common, found in about 94 to 99 percent of domestic cats. Type B is less common and is usually seen in exotic purebred cats. The rarest type is AB². These blood types are determined by the presence or absence of specific proteins (antigens) on the surface of red blood cells. Cats with type A blood have the A antigen, while those with type B blood have the B antigen³. Identifying a cat’s blood type is crucial for safe transfusions, as there are no universal donors among cats. Matching donors and recipients helps prevent adverse reactions during blood transfusions¹.
