How to determine whether a dog is infected with canine distemper virus?

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease affecting dogs and other carnivores. Clinical signs vary but commonly include fever, eye or nose discharge, coughing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. In severe cases, neurologic signs like stumbling, muscle twitches, and seizures may occur⁴.

To diagnose CDV, veterinarians use PCR tests to detect the virus’s genetic material and assess blood antibody levels. Properly vaccinated dogs are usually immune. If exposed, serology tests can determine vulnerability. Early recognition is crucial, as CDV spreads rapidly and weakens the immune system, leaving dogs susceptible to secondary infections⁴. Remember, vaccination is essential for prevention, especially in young or unvaccinated dogs⁴⁵.
