Canine influenza, also known as dog flu, is an infectious respiratory disease caused by influenza A viruses. There are two strains found in the United States: H3N8 and H3N2. While most cases are not fatal, it’s essential to be aware of the symptoms. The mortality rate for healthy dogs is low, ranging from 1% to 5%. Most deaths occur in dogs with concurrent severe illnesses²³. The virus spreads through respiratory secretions (coughing, sneezing) and contaminated objects. Dogs are most contagious during the incubation period before symptoms appear. Infected dogs can shed the virus for up to 10 days (H3N8) or 26 days (H3N2). Isolation and vigilance help prevent transmission. Remember, almost all dogs exposed to the disease will contract it, but not all show symptoms¹. Rest assured, canine influenza is not transmitted to humans, and the risk of death remains low for infected dogs⁴. 🐾
