How long does the canine distemper virus survive?

The canine distemper virus (CDV) is relatively fragile and does not survive long outside a host. Here’s what we know about its environmental stability:

  • 🧫 Outside the host: CDV is an enveloped RNA virus, which makes it highly susceptible to environmental degradation. It typically survives only a few hours in warm, dry conditions.
  • ❄️ Cold environments: In cooler, moist conditions, it may persist for a few days, but this is uncommon.
  • 🧼 Disinfection: The virus is easily destroyed by common disinfectants, heat, and UV light, making sanitation an effective control measure.
  • 🐶 Infected animals: Dogs infected with CDV can shed the virus for several weeks, and in some cases, even months, especially if they are immunocompromised.

Vaccination is the best defense, as properly vaccinated dogs are typically immune to infection.
