Canine coronavirus disease (CCoV) is a highly infectious intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies. It’s caused by the canine coronavirus, which is from the Coronaviridae family. The virus spreads through oral contact with infected feces or contaminated food bowls. Crowded and unsanitary conditions facilitate transmission. Symptoms include sudden-onset diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Although most cases are mild, severe symptoms can occur, especially in young puppies. Secondary infections may prolong illness. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses, but supportive care can help manage symptoms. Notably, CCoV is distinct from SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19 in humans) and doesn’t affect people. A vaccine is available for CCoV, and infected dogs may remain carriers for up to 6 months after infection¹².
